Message Now here's what's going on: I have FOREVER loved 300zx's; they've
honestly been my dream car since the first time I saw them, and just
last spring I had my dreams come true when I came across a
BEAUTIFUL, flawless 300zx N/A. She was owned by an original owner
who took her to the shop every two weeks to perform check-ups and oil
changes and at the point in time that I came across it she had only
86000 miles on her. Pristine.
But lately I'm beginning to think more and more about that dream I've
always had, and it involved a turbo. At the time of purchase I did not
know that N/A's were nearly impossible to turbo, so I thought wow! I've
got the greatest base car in the world to work on. But over time and
LOTS of reading I've come to realize that to fulfill my dream I have to
pick one of two options- keep my z and have the most mint condition z
I've ever seen and have a very fine half a dream OR proceed with plan
B and be an insanely happy man.
Here's plan B: Take a good looking N/A that has a toasted motor (which
happens to be selling right down the road for 2200), order an N/A-TT
conversion kit and a 600hp power pack from z1motorsports, hire
somebody that has done an engine swap before to help me pull this off
and actually swap motors to give me a 600hp z with the gear
differentials and the absence of the HICAS system. It has to be a
different z then mine though, because I can not bring myself to pull the
heart out of mine (it being such an amazingly well serviced z). With all
the numbers crunched (including selling the my Zero..) I would probably
have to pay $3000 to $4000 more then I paid for the N/A. Not bad,
seeing as how going with z1's professional swap and using my car would
be 15,000+ extra.
So lately I've been reading day in and day out how to do these swaps,
and with some experience under my belt, including work on my z, the
added support of watching college kids pulling off engine swaps on
youtube and someone that has done the swap helping me at my side, I
feel encouraged to proceed with plan b. But then I see ad after ad of
300zx "turbo"'s that obviously have had the swap performed on sale with
"engine troubles" and I lose a lot of my hope.
Now the reason I am posting is because I'm having a lot of trouble and a
lot of stress trying to figure out what to do- live out my dream of having
a 600hp 300zx (no joke, since I was 8 this has been my exact dream-
and hopefully you guys will understand because you are as passionate
as I am about cars), or stick with the incredible jewel that I own now. If
anyone could help me out with how hard the swap is (with SOME
mechanical experience, meaning I've fully restored a 1936 plymouth p4
and I know every basic part of modern engines, but I've never actually
conquered a task like this), where I can find a man near boulder, CO
who can help me with this, how much power I'd actually feel (I've driven
a stock 300zxtt and it actually wasn't much faster then my N/A vs. 600hp
almost triples my output..), and whether these swaps inevitably end up
with lemon cars then you would seriously be my saviour and an end to a
constant headache of thinking how the hell I'm gonna go about figuring
out if the risk is worth it. Just keep in mind that the last thing in the
world that I want to happen is losing my perfect z for a lemon tt. Thank
you so much for your time.
